For the second straight year, Santa Monica High School has won the LA/Orange Counties competition in the regional Ocean Sciences Bowl, which is held annually at USC, and is sponsored by the USC Wrigley Institute for Environmental Sciences and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Having won the regional competition against 17 other teams, Santa Monica will now advance to the national competition to be held next month in Biloxi, Mississippi. Last year, Santa Monica’s team finished in fifth place in the national competition, which was held in Charleston, South Carolina. In the February 26th regional competition, Santa Monica’s team went undefeated in the first 5 head-to-head matches of pool play, after which it went undefeated in the next three rounds of double elimination play, and defeated Woodbridge High School of Irvine, 79-50, in the final match.Members of the winning team are Courtney Borden, Areeb Pirani, Douglas Matsunaga and Eileen Wong. The Samohi academic decathlon team is taught and coached by Ingo Gaida.
