SMC Coach Inducted into Hall of Fame

John McMullen, the winningest mens’ basketball coach in Santa Monica College history, will be inducted into the California Community College Mens’ Basketball Hall of Fame Friday in San Diego.

McMullen, whose teams won 529 games and six conference championships over 25 seasons, was previously honored at an SMC game.

McMullen retired from coaching after last season but is still teaching physical education at the school.

His SMC teams won 68 percent of their games and one player, forward Anthony Frederick, made it to the NBA.

 

SMC’s Smith Named to All-Conference Team

Santa Monica College point guard Jonathan Smith has been named to the all-Western State Conference first team in basketball.

Two Corsair teammates, guard Jun Nakanishi and forward Efrem Lawrence, won honorable mention nods.

SMC closed its season with a 63-56 victory over West Los Angeles College. After losing 10 straight games, the Corsairs won three of their final four.

 

Olympics Leader to Speak at SMC

Anita DeFrantz, a leader in the Olympics movement and onetime bronze medalist, will speak at Santa Monica College Tuesday, March 15 at 11:15 a.m. The  subject of her speech is “Women In Sports’ Life Lessons.”

Her appearance coincides with Women’s History Month. Admission is free at SMC’s Concert Hall.

 

SM Legion Baseball Seeks Donations

The Santa Monica American Legion baseball program, which has been fielding teams for many years and won a national champioinship in the 1970s, is seeking donations.

The organization is planning to field two teams for the season beginning in June, one with younger players.For information call (310) 394-5284. The address is 739 17th St., Santa Monica, 90402.
