Samohi To Present Masterworks Concert Friday:

The Santa Monica High School Performing Arts Department will hold its seventh annual Masterworks Series Concert in Barnum Hall on the Samohi campus on Friday, April 29, 2005 at 7pm.

Begun in 1998, the Masterworks series is designed to give students the opportunity to study a major work or song cycle by a single composer.

In previous concerts in the series, the Choral and Instrumental departments have collaborated on such masterworks as Mozart’s Requiem, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, and Bach’s Magnificat.

On Friday, the Chamber Singers, winners of the Grand Champion trophy at the recent festival in Honolulu, will perform “Cantigas de Amigo,” by Paul Carey, a contemporary Chicago composer. They will be accompanied by four cellos from the Symphony Orchestra.

The Madrigal Ensemble will perform eight a capella pieces by David Avshalomov, which have been pulled from his complete settings of William Blake’s “Songs of Innocence” and “Songs of Experience.”

The Samohi Symphony Orchestra cellos will then perform Hector illa-Lobos’s “Bacchianas Brazilieras” with Soprno Soloist, Emma Korvin, a senior in the Samohi Choir.

For the grand finale, the Samohi Chorale and the Samohi Chamber Orchestra and Winds will perform Mozart’s “Missa Trinitatis K167.”Tickets are available through any choir student and will be sold at the door. Parking is available at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium Parking Lot, located directly across 4th street from Samohi.
