Samohi Track Teams Qualify 22 For CIF:

It has been an extraordinary year for the Santa Monica High boys and girls track teams.

The boys won the Ocean League championship while the girls finished second to Beverly Hills.

Both teams then did well in the league meet which was held at Beverly Hills High with 22 Samohi athletes qualifying for the CIF meet.

The CIF prelims were held last Friday. The CIF finals will be held this weekend at Cerritos College and the state meet the following weekend in Sacramento.

“We were fortunate to do very well,’’ said Samohi athletic director Doug Kim. “The participants and our coaches did outstanding work. We’ve done very well in track through the years. We’re usually right there.’’

Pat Cady is the girls head coach, and Tania Fischer is the boys head coach. Ray Humphrey, who coaches the sprinters, is completing the season and then will move on to Malibu High as head football coach after spending the last 12 years at Samohi.

The boys 4×100 relay team consisted of Daniel Locke, Geo Allen, Freddie Leslie and Lamar McQueen. The boys 4×400 team included McQueen, Lewis Adeyemi, Robert Robinson and Omed Odami. Locke and Adeyemi are tailbacks on the football team.

Keith Jamerson excels in the discus throw.Stephanie Thornton is an outstanding distance runner on the girls team. She holds the school record in the 800. Other standouts include Marshea Wilson, Jackie Sicard, Rebecca Frank, Sabrina Fields and two freshmen, Diane Coote and Sinea Schreiber.
