Main Street To Celebrate Summer SOULstice:

The 5th annual Main Street Santa Monica Summer SOULstice will arrive Sunday, with live music, pony rides, a petting farm, a scavenger hunt with big prizes and a sidewalk sale.

The Main Street Business Improvement Association in Santa Monica sponsors the annual celebration, which is scheduled Sunday, June 26, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m, on Main Street between Pico and Marine. The sidewalk sale will begin on Saturday.

Activities will take place in parking lots, courtyards and on select side streets. Many Main Street merchants will offer items on sale as part of the Sidewalk Sale or in-store activities.

Live music will be played nonstop from noon to 6 p.m. Tribute bands Highway 61 (a Dylan tribute), The Neil Deal (a tribute to Neil Young), and Peace Frog (The Doors tribute band), will return for a second year, and Number 9 (a tribute to the Beatles), and The Rolling Clones (a Stones tribute band) are also on the program.

In addition, there will be a variety of music sponsored by Indie 103 and Jams World, and an Edgemar music event coordinated by composer/guitarist Jonathon Grasse.

According to Edgemar owner Abby Sher, “It will feature site-specific new music works, structured improvisations, and an open-space/multi-stage format for large and small ensembles, soloists, live electronics, and dancers. Using Edgemar’s courtyard, terrace, and architectural nooks and crannies, the four-hour set of pieces welcomes audience members to walk about freely exploring sound and space. Segments of the event include a hybrid approach to improvisation influenced by the Big Sur Experimental Music Festival’s Sound/Shift and the Soundwalk ‘happening’ of Long Beach. Collaborators include members of the innovative ensembles Surrealestate, SoNu, other highly original Los Angeles musicians, and the inventively fresh choreographer Kristen Smiarowski and friends.”

Children’s activities will include pony rides, a petting farm, face-painting and balloon twisting with Rockie the Clown; and Jersey Jim, a comedy magician.

The Scavanger Hunt has become an annual event. Up for grabs will be a grand prize — night at the Sea Shore Motel and dinner for four at Chinois; a second grand prize—a Sprint cell phone from the Sprint Store on Main Street; a third grand prize—a bike from Bike Attack, and 50 other prizes.

Scavenger Hunt clue sheets will be available on Sunday, June 19 at: the Main Street website: www.mainstreetsm.com/cluesheet.html, the Main Street Table at the Sunday Farmer’s Market, participating stores June 19 – June 26, and on the day of the SOULstice at information tables at Hollister & Main and the First Federal Lot (between Ashland & Hill).

Parking is available in the Main Street municipal lots and all day parking is available at the beach lots only two blocks away for $6. Check the Main Street website at www.mainstreetsm.com for additional and up-to-date information, or call (310) 899-9555.
