Football

Venice High earned a first place tie with Fairfax in the Western League by defeating University, 36-20 as Kenny Ashley had a 49-yard touchdown run. Both had 4-1 league records. University was 3-2,  Westchester was fourth and Palisades, which lost to Westchester, 41-7, was last at 0-5.

Malibu completed Ray Humphrey’s first season as head coach with a 46-0 loss at Villanova Prep (Ojai). The Sharks were 4-6.

Lighthouse Christian didn’t play last weekend but will take a 7-0 record into a game Saturday against Skyward Christian of Tujunga.

 

Girls’ Volleyball

Lighthouse Christian won its CIF Division XV first round match from Bethel Baptist of Santa Ana, 3-0.

New Roads was eliminated from the CIF playoffs by Thatcher in the first round after winning the first set. The scores were 25-23, 21-25, 17-25 and 19-25. Roya Smith had six kills and three aces. Ana Ramirez had 9 kills and three aces.

Venice was eliminated from the LA City playoffs in a five-set quarterfinals loss to Narbonne, 18-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 11-15. Narbonne was seeded fourth and Venice fifth.

 

Boys Water Polo

Santa Monica High, which is seeded No. 2, won a CIF playoff match from Norco, 11-4.       

 

BasketballThe Santa Monica College men began their season with a 112-84 loss at Chaffey College. In the second game SMC lost to Mt. San Antonio, 95-81. Trevor Shickman has begun his second season as head coach.
