On Thursday, February 9, at 4:39 a.m., the Santa Monica Police Department responded to an alleged carjacking at Michigan Avenue and 10th Street. The highjacked vehicle was a black/red Dodge Shadow.According to preliminary information from the Santa Monica police, officers located the vehicle in Venice at 4:55 am. On seeing the police, the suspect stopped the car and got out. Armed with a shotgun, he fired at the officers, got back in the car, and took off with the police in pursuit. Stopping in the 400 block of Santa Clara Avenue, the suspect got out of the car again and pointed a shotgun at officers, who fired at him. “Officers gave verbal commands encouraging the suspect to surrender,” according to a SMPD press release. The suspect refused to comply and again pointed the shotgun at officers, who again fired at him. “The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics,” according to the release. No police officers were injured, nor was the man whose car was stolen.At presstime, the suspect had not been identified.
