Keiley Reelected President of SMMCTA
Harry M. Keiley was recently reelected President of the Santa Monica Malibu Classroom Teachers Association. He won over 76 percent of the teachers’ votes. This will be Keiley’s fourth time as president of the association. Says Keiley, “I am thrilled and honored. The election results validate our team’s endeavors over the past six years. I look forward to continuing the important work of standing up for students, teachers and public education.”
Samohi Principal Ilene Strauss Resigns
Ilene Straus has resigned as principal of Santa Monica High School. Her reign at the school has been marred by recent controversy over her handling of problems and fights between Latino and African American students.
In the March 16-22 issue of the Mirror, several parents spoke out against Straus. Said SAMOHI parent Lori Williams, “A change needs to be made and the change is that we need someone to do the whole job.” Another SAMOHI parent, Marjorie Allen, told the Board, “Dr. Straus has been trying to do a good job for many years. We’ve given her a lot of time to get that job done. Unfortunately, it hasn’t gotten done.”
Prior to her duties at SAMOHI, Straus was principal at Lincoln Middle School. It was under Straus’s guidance that Lincoln became a national Blue Ribbon School.
There was no word at press time as to who will be the SAMOHI’s new principal.
