Cameron Collins, who combines athletic ability with superior classroom skills, has given a verbal commitment to Oregon State, although he is still being recruited by other schools.
The Samohi all-Ocean League defensive back has been popular with college recruiters throughout the process, and is expected to sign a letter of intent when high school players are permitted to that in early February.
But with who? Collins is also believed to be interested in Stanford and Villanova, among others. The verbal commitment is a way of saying that Oregon State is in the lead.
Collins was also an outstanding receiver at Samohi, but suffered a broken hand this season, missed four games and then wore a brace that hampered his ability to catch passes. He is expected to concentrate on defense in college.
In one game he didn’t play on offense, but made 17 tackles on defense.
Of Samohi’s bevy of outstanding players, he attracted the most attention of college scouts.
Collins is so versatile that he has also spent some time as a backup quarterback at Samohi.
