SM Celebrates Rose Kaufman Day:

Longtime activist Rose Kaufman was honored by the City of Santa Monica with her very own day, as August 19, 2007 was officially declared “Rose Kaufman Day in Santa Monica.”

Kaufman, 94, has lived in Santa Monica for nearly five decades and been a volunteer with the League of Women Voters of Santa Monica for over 55 years as well as a volunteer with the City of Santa Monica for over two decades.

A former two-time president of the League, through the years Kaufman has also served on various boards and commissions in Santa Monica, including the Commission on Older Americans and the Citizens Task Force on Development.

“I joined the League of Women Voters in Toledo, Ohio for $3 a year,” said Kaufman. “It was either December 1950 or January 1951, but it seems like only yesterday. So here I am. I think you are all honoring me just because I survived, but I appreciate it. I am really very touched. All I can say is that League people are special people.”
