Carl Kindborg, a 6-foot-3 freshman from Sweden, was named all-tournament when the Santa Monica College men’s basketball team competed in the Los Angeles City College event this month.
SMC defeated East Los Angeles, lost by six points to Yuba City, one of the state’s highest-ranked teams, and defeated Rio Hondo. In the latter game both Kindborg and guard Noah Gottlieb scored 15 points.
“Carl is a solid player and good shooter,” said SMC coach Jesse Teplitzky.
SMC then went to the Irvine Valley Tournament. The Corsairs lost to the host team, 88-63, despite 24 points by Gottlieb, then won a consolation bracket game from a San Diego team, 61-55, as 6-foot-8 John Brown emerged as the Corsairs’ leading rebounder and forward Kelvan Cross scored 14 points.
Teplitzky said both of SMC’s point guards, Chris Blackwood (shin splints) and Avery Martin (sprained ankle) have been slowed by injuries. Gottlieb, an all-conference point guard last season who shifted to off-guard this season, has resumed playing some minutes at the point.
SMC had a 4-2 record going into a home game Tuesday, November 20 against LA Southwest. The result was not available at press time.
