Westside Basketball Roundup:

The Santa Monica High boys’ basketball team overcame a slow start to the season by winning the El Segundo Tournament in mid-December.

Samohi defeated powerful Loyola, 61-60, and then won the championship game from St. John Bosco, 55-51.

 The wins improved Samohi’s record to 5-3.

 Edward Willis and Willie Goetz are the most prominent returnees from last season’s 21-6 team. Samohi’s Jaren Feeron and Justin Maxwell were co-MVPs of the tournament.

 The Crossroads girls won the Buckley Tournament and sophomore guard Megan Bear was named MVP. Bear is averaging 18 points per game, and center Christina Murray is averaging 21.

 The Roadrunners are 7-4, including a home court loss to New Roads.

 The Venice boys are 2-0, with wins over San Fernando (65-54) and Reseda (71-68).

 The Venice girls are 1-4, including a 55-49 win over Carson.
