Coinciding with Harvelle’s speakeasy past, the Santa Monica nightclub is going all out this New Year’s Eve. Featuring a special performance from piano-based outfit 2000 lbs of Blues with guest guitarist Rick Holmstrom, this event boasts a 1920s/30s theme with “lots of dancing and excessive carousing.” Party favors will include feather boas, fedoras, and tiaras, and formal dress is encouraged. If you’re in the mood to channel William Powell and Myrna Loy, this is the place to be.

Breakestra, Jeremy Sole

Monday, December 31, 9 p.m., $40

Zanzibar, 1301 5th Street, 310.451.2221

With a large, rotating cast of characters, Los Angeles-based Breakestra has brought hip-hop history full circle. Inspired by the drum breaks within the classic funk and soul songs that became the sampled beats of hip-hop, this group of accomplished musicians quickly earned fans by combining live, funky instrumentation with full-bodied soul vocals and heavy-hitting raps. Jeremy Sole, of Thursday night’s Afro Funké party, will be spinning the pre-recorded jams throughout the course of this KCRW-presented party.
