Softball Roundup:

Venice High’s softball team is off to an outstanding start. The Gondoliers’ record is 8-2-1, including a 9-3 win over Westchester in their Western League opener.

In other recent games Venice defeated Fillmore, 9-8, and Nordhoff, 14-2.

Danielle Mestas is batting .633 and has pitched all the victories but one. The other winning pitcher was Jamie Kenyon.

Melinda Lopez and Michelle Aver are both batting .500.

Samohi won three straight games – 5-4 over Silverado of Victorville, 4-1 over Highland of Palmdale and 3-2 over Quartz Hill – before losing to Crescenta Valley, 5-3. The Vikings’ record is 7-4.

There was some doubt whether Crossroads would field a team this season when the turnout initially wasn’t adequate. But with several additions from the school’s CIF championship basketball squad the Roadrunners have begun and recorded four non-league victories.

Crossroads has defeated Montclair Prep 4-0, Beverly Hills 7-1, Oakwood 16-2, and Windward 3-1.

New Roads has played one game, a 12-9 victory over Highland Hall.
