Fatal Fire:

One man was killed in a fire in a small commercial structure at 3028 Nebraska Avenue on Tuesday night, April 8.

The Santa Monica Fire Department responded at 10:23 p.m. to the fire in the Drescher complex of buildings, originally manufacturing/commercial structures that have been largely given over to artists’ studios between Stanford and Berkeley Streets just north of Olympic Boulevard.

Neither the identity nor the cause of death for the victim were available at press time, and SMFD Captain Scott Ziegert could only identify the man as being approximately 60 years old. An autopsy is being performed, Ziegert said.

Fire damage is limited to a single unit of the complex, as the fire department responded with three engine companies, one truck company, one rescue ambulance, one battalion chief, two fire investigators, and the assistance of the SMPD.
