When Santa Monica College’s football team plays its home opener September 27 against LA Valley it will compete on Corsair Field’s new FieldTurf instead of natural grass. And that won’t be the only departure from past seasons.Instead of playing a night game, as usual, the Corsairs will host a 1 p.m. contest. All the rest of the team’s games are scheduled for kickoffs at either 6 or 7 p.m.Because the field is currently torn up and an exact date for completing installation of the new turf isn’t known, SMC will play its first three games away.SMC will open September 6 at Orange Coast College (6 p.m.), will play September 13 at Cerritos (7 p.m.) and September 20 at Bakersfield (7 p.m.)After playing Valley, SMC will be at Antelope Valley October 4 at 7 p.m., have a bye and then play its second home game October 18 against Santa Barbara at 7 p.m.West LA College will come to Corsair Field October 25 at 7 p.m.In November, SMC will be at East LA on the 1st (6 p.m.), will host LA Southwest on the 8th (7 p.m.) and will play at Pierce College on the 15th (7 p.m.)Practice will begin in August. Currently SMC’s players are in a summer conditioning class evenings on the baseball field at Santa Monica High.
