Former Santa Monica High quarterback Ryan Katz didn’t play in Oregon State’s 27-21 upset of top-ranked USC on September 25, but his future with the Beavers appears bright.
Katz was in uniform and able to play in Oregon State’s first two games, both on the road, but wasn’t called upon. At that point a decision was made that he would redshirt this season.
“We traveled him but I hoped it wouldn’t be necessary that he play,” Oregon State coach Mike Riley told Los Angeles writers via telephone. “The redshirt year will do him good.
“Ryan has a lot of skills. We’re very excited about him.”
Karz, who will be a redshirt freshman next season, may not play a lot then either because Lyle Moevao, who directed the win over the Trojans, will be a senior. However, Katz is likely to contend strongly for the starting job the next year.
