SMC ‘58 Football Champs to be Honored:

The 1958 Santa Monica College football team – undefeated and national champions – will be inducted into the school’s Sports Hall Of Fame on Saturday, November 8.

The team will be introduced at halftime of the Corsairs’ Homecoming game that evening.

The ‘58 Corsairs regularly played before capacity crowds at home games, and won the Junior Rose Bowl game in Pasadena over Northeastern Oklahoma, 30-12, before 50,000 fans.

The coach was Jim Powers, and the most recognized players were quarterback Pat Young, running back Lloyd Winston, and tackle Marv Marinovich.

Defensive back Jack Silas tracked down 36 of the 42 players and coaches, who are now in their sixties and seventies. Eleven others have passed away.
