Brentwood Advances To Second Round:

There were 16 teams selected in the division where Brentwood School plays its playoff football games. Half of the field was eliminated in the first round November 21, and with eight teams left Eagles coach Patrick Brown believes all are capable of winning.

“It’s going to be tough now,” said Brown. “The score was one-sided in our first round game against Arrowhead Christian but misleading. They were a legitimate playoff team too.”

Brentwood overcame a poor first quarter and a 7-0 deficit to record a 42-21 victory at Crespi High in Encino, benefiting from several big plays, including a CIF record-tying 99-yard touchdown run by quarterback Josh Amster that tied the game.

Amster later suffered a bruised hand and missed some of the second half. The hand wasnt broken and he returned midway through the fourth quarter.

It is likely Amster will be available when Brentwood travels to Fillmore High Friday night, November 28 for its second round game. Brentwood has a 10-1 record and Fillmore is 9-2. Brentwood’s lone defeat was to Santa Paula in its league championship game.

Fillmore won its first round game from Desert, 48-37.

Brentwood had three turnovers and four penalties in the opening quarter of its first round game. But a 16-yard run by Amster tied the score midway through the second quarter.

Arrowhead Christian then drove to Brentwood’s one-yard line but lost the ball on a fumble. On the next play Amster made his 99-yard run.

Turning an early deficit into a halftime lead would have given Brentwood enough satisfaction, but the Eagles scored again for a 21-7 advantage.

Arrowhead Christian reduced the deficit to 21-13 in the third quarter, but Amster came back into the game in the fourth and threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Greg Oliva. Oliva then intercepted a pass and returned it 65 yards for another touchdown. When Arrowhead Christian fumbled away the ensuing kickoff, Brentwood quickly scored again, making three it three touchdowns in three minutes for a 42-13 lead.

Brentwood running back Alex Kelln contributed to the victory with 83 yards in 12 carries and end Charlie James played superbly on defense. Among his contributions were two fumble recoveries.

Brentwood, however, suffered one more injury. Junior Ben Kussin-Shoptaw had a knee problem and his status for the next game is to be determined.
