In 1865, African-Americans in Galveston, Texas did not become aware that slavery was over until June 19th, when Union soldiers sailed into port and read a proclamation. Today “Juneteenth” is celebrated as an anniversary of a significant American event. Virginia Avenue Park’s annual gathering features art, music (including great jazz), African-American cuisine, and community memories.

Charlie Lustman, star of the long-running Made Me Nuclear, hosts, Rich Friend provides the piano accompaniment, and there will be a Chaplin look-alike contest. Bring your Dad-or your-kid.
