On September 11th, as part of a nationwide remembrance and volunteer service day to commemorate the Sept. 11, 2001 tragedies, local wetlands advocates from the Ballona Institute and more than 60 student volunteers from UCLA, coordinated by the university’s Office of Residential Life, gathered at the Ballona Creek Estuary to spend a few hours cleaning up, protecting and restoring some of the area’s coastal wetlands and dune habitat. UCLA officials said they decided to participate in this event in order to heighten students’ connection to their local environment and to increase their knowledge of the wetlands by giving them the opportunity to do hands-on preservation activities.
