St. Monica Ends League Play Winless:

The season didn’t go as Larry Muno envisioned, but the St. Monica football coach remains optimistic about upcomimg years for the program.

St. Monica concluded its Santa Fe League schedule without a win by losing to St. Anthony, 20-13 Saturday night at Corsair Field.

After being overwhelmed by a couple of the league’s powerhouses the Mariners had a game against a team of roughly equal ability.

The game was tied at 13 when St. Anthony faced a third and 35 situation but scored a touchdown on a long pass when a St. Monica defender fell down.

St. Monica went 0-4 in league games but did win two non-league games. The Mariners had lost 37 of 38 in four years under three other head coaches.

Muno’s fast-moving, wide open offense gave opponents a headache, but lack of depth in a tough league was too much to overcome.

St. Monica will complete its season with a non-league Friday at Western Christian.

“There’s a lot here to build upon,” said Muno. “We have a good nucleus for next season and support from the administration has been excellent.”
