McMullen Inducted Into SMC Hall of Fame:

When John McMullen was inducted into the Santa Monica College Sports Hall of Fame Saturday he joined an elite group of honorees.

Previous inductees include Olympic gold medalist and retired SMC professor Tommie Smith, four-time Olympic gold medalist and SMC alumnus Lenny Krayzelburg, and Olympic bronze medalist and SMC alumnus Johnny Gray.

The induction ceremony is sponsored by the SMC Foundation.

McMullen retired as the SMC mens’ basketball coach in 2004 after 25 years. He continued teaching physical education, 2007, then became assistant basketball coach at New Mexico State for two years on the staff of his former SMC assistant, Marvin Menzies, who became the New Mexico State head coach.

Now fully retired, McMullen lives in Brentwood. He is married and has two grown sons.

McMullen’s SMC teams won 529 games, won the Western State Conference championship six times, reached the state tournament five times and compiled a .689 winning percentage. More than 150 of his players then played at four-year schools and one, Anthony Frederick. played in the NBA.
