St. Monica Wins On Senior Night:

It was Senior Night on Friday, February 5, the last regular season game on the St. Monica boys’ basketball schedule.

As the Mariners began the game against St. Paul, an eventual 64-58 victory, Coach Tony Depa started five seniors — three who play regularly and two who don’t.

Ryan Capiro, Ryan Featherston and Richard Gibson were joined by Mitch Diaz and Daniel White, the only three-sport letterman at the school. White has baseball left after the basketball season ends.

But it was a junior who made the greatest impression. Reserve point guard Andrew Castro tied Capiro for high point honors with 19 and guided the victory.

“Andrew has been playing really well in recent games,” said Depa.

Two regular season games remained on the second place Mariners’ schedule, at first place La Salle and at Mary Star. St. Monica, with 16 wins, is assured of a CIF playoff berth and may receive consideration for a home game in the first round.
