Santa Monica Bike Center named a Silver Award Level Bicycle Friendly Business:

The League of American Bicyclists has recognized Santa Monica Bike Center as a Silver Bicycle Friendly Business (BFB). With the announcement of 67 new BFBs today, Santa Monica Bike Center joins a visionary group of more than 400 local businesses, government agencies and Fortune 500 companies across the United States that are transforming the American workplace. The Santa Monica Bike Center was created by the City of Santa Monica, with funding from METRO, to support and encourage people to ride bicycles in the City, especially to commute, connect to regional transit and the Exposition Light Rail, now under construction.

“Santa Monica Bike Center is at the forefront of a movement to make American businesses more competitive, sustainable and attractive to the best and brightest employees,” said Andy Clarke, President of the League of American Bicyclists. “An investment in bicycling enhances employee health, increases sustainability and improves the bottom line.”

Bicycle-friendly businesses improve the workplace and contribute to the community and improve their overall earnings. Santa Monica Bike Center encourages bicycling as an easy option for transportation and provides amenities such as secure, indoor bicycle parking, lockers, showers, bike repair, commuter incentives and bike education programs.

“We are proud to be the first business in Santa Monica to be recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Business,” said Santa Monica Bike Center General Manager, Ron Durgin. “The Bike Center is committed to promoting bicycling as a healthy, efficient and cost effective mode for daily trips and we hope our BFB Silver Award will inspire other businesses in the community to become more bicycle friendly.”

“The Santa Monica Bike Center was created to promote and encourage bicycling,” according to Lucy Dyke, Deputy Director for Special Projects for the City of Santa Monica. “It’s the largest facility of its kind in the country, and it offers programs, services and secure parking to residents, visitors and people who work in Santa Monica. We have had a very positive response from the community since it opened last November.”

Moving forward, Santa Monica Bike Center will have access to a variety of free tools and technical assistance from the League to become even more bicycle-friendly. The Bike Center will also provide technical assistance to Santa Monica businesses interested in applying for recognition as a BFB.
