Upward Bound House Named As Organization Of The Year Award Finalist:

The Los Angeles Business Journal has selected Santa Monica-based Upward Bound House as a finalist for its 2012 Organization of the Year award.

The award announcements were made at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles on June 19.

Upward Bound House, a leading provider of housing and services for homeless families with childre, was recognized for making a deep impact on the Los Angeles community in addressing family homelessness.

Family homelessness is often described as “the hidden homeless.”

Yet while homeless families are rarely seen on the streets, there are more 6,000 homeless children throughout Los Angeles County.

This number is swelling — in the past two years the number of unsheltered homeless families has doubled.

David Snow, UBH’s Executive Director, praised the UBH staff and community for their dedication.

“This award truly belongs to the hardest working team of professionals and compassionate volunteers I could imagine,” Snow said

UBH has brought visibility and best-practice solutions to the crisis of family homelessness. Since opening their doors in 1997, more than 500 families have graduated from UBH, including over 1,000 children. UBH programs are heavily structured and allow families to quickly stabilize, receive the support and tools necessary to retain their housing and to place families into appropriate, affordable, permanent housing.

An astonishing 95 percent of families remain housed at least one year after graduating from UBH.

The Los Angeles Business Journal’s Nonprofit and Corporate Citizen Awards recognize organizations in the nonprofit world that make a positive impact on the community and do so under significant financial constraints.

Matthew Toledo, Publisher and CEO of the Los Angeles Business Journal, congratulated UBH on being named a finalist.

“You are more than heroes – you are an essential part of future corporate and societal success,” Toldedo said.
