An antique style grenade as well as military style signaling pyrotechnic devices were found in a Santa Monica apartment on Sunday afternoon after a building manager was clearing out a rented garage from a resident who had recently passed away.

The Santa Monica Police Department responded to the 2400 block of 20th Street to investigate a box of suspicious items on Sept. 16 at 5:10 p.m.

The box was found by an apartment building manager when she was cleaning out a rented garage that had been rented by an elderly Santa Monica resident who recently passed away.

The elderly resident was a veteran and had used the garage to store his personal items as well as souvenirs and memorabilia from his military service.

Police officers examined the suspicious box and observed an antique style grenade as well as military style signaling pyrotechnic devices.

A small group of residents who lived adjacent to the garage were asked to evacuate for a short time.

The Los Angeles Police Department Bomb Disposal Unit responded to the location and rendered the items safe.
