Avoid Carmageddon: Buy Local This Weekend In Santa Monica:

With the 405 Freeway closing between the 10 and 101 Freeways this Saturday and Sunday for “Carmageddon II,” Santa Monica businesses are taking the opportunity to keep residents local by offering unique deals and specials.

More than 40 Santa Monica businesses will be participating through “Buy Local Santa Monica,” a campaign created by representatives of the local business community and City of Santa Monica to support local businesses and raise awareness of the community, economic, and environmental benefits of choosing local first.

“Carmageddon II is the perfect opportunity for us to remind everyone how much our local businesses have to offer,” said Jennifer Taylor, Founding Member and Chair of Buy Local Santa Monica. “From fresh Farmers Market produce to award-winning dining, trend setting fashion and unrivaled spa and fitness experiences; Santa Monica truly has everything you need!”

In an effort to encourage bike tourism, the City of Santa Monica, Santa Monica Convention & Visitors Bureau (SMCVB), and the Buy Local Santa Monica campaign has created Santa Monica self-guided bike itineraries, according to different themes including arts, wellness, vintage shopping, and sustainability.

“Seventy percent of Santa Monica hotel visitors never use a car while they are here,” said Misti Kerns, President/CEO of the Santa Monica Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“Our beach, dining, shopping, and attractions are all within walking and biking distance, making it very easy for residents and visitors to experience a car-free lifestyle year round.”

Kerns encouraged residents to take part in a ton of fun events and specials taking place in Santa Monica.

“We encourage residents to be a tourist in your own city and use our website as a resource for event listings and itinerary suggestions,” she said.
