The St. Monica Mariners football team took a tough loss 28-14 against Brentwood High School on Saturday night.
The Mariners were still hoping to pull off a win late in the fourth quarter when wide receiver Lukas Dretzka completed a touchdown. The clock stopped at 2:02 minutes, but with the team trailing 28-14, time wasn’t on their side.
“It was a lot of missed assignments and we let them make plays,” said St. Monica High School Head Coach Adam Guerra.
Quarterback Luke Cain’s game proved streaky as he struggled to reach his receivers, especially since running back Kevin Holubowski has been out of the game with an ankle injury for the past two weeks.
“I think Luke did pretty well. His reads were right and for the most part he was around the ball,” said Coach Guerra.
“You have to be able to run the football – that’s the way we do things – and then you have to be able to take advantage, not drop passes and defensively not let them score.”
Further, Coach Guerra doesn’t credit Holubowksi’s injury as an excuse for not playing well.
“We ran the ball for over 150 yards last week on 30 carries. The way we work on in our offensive line it shouldn’t matter who’s in the backfield. We should be able to get the blocks done. It shouldn’t make a difference,” said Coach Guerra.
Coach Guerra said he looked forward to more practice.
“We obviously have them in the right spot but now it’s on us to coach them to the point where they make the play. We didn’t do that as coaching staff. We have a lot of work to do,” said Coach Guerra.
Saint Monica High School will next play Webb High School away this Saturday, Sept. 22.
