Free Shredding, E-Waste Recycling Day This Saturday In Santa Monica:

Too bad your aging entertainment electronics didn’t quite sell at your garage sale. It’s hard to get rid of an old hard drive, and just trashing old sensitive papers is too often an invitation to identity theft. Plus, getting it all recycled by professionals can be costly.

Fortunately, you live in Santa Monica and the City of Santa Monica’s Resource Recovery & Recycling Division will help you safely dispose of your unwanted records and documents and your obsolete electronics at a free Shredding and E-Waste Recycling Day this Saturday, Oct. 13.

All Santa Monica residents are invited to participate from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. — just bring your recyclables to the City Yards, 2500 Michigan Avenue in Santa Monica.

Shredding is the reliable way of safely and properly disposing of documents that otherwise could open the door to identity theft. That’s why the City has arranged to provide secure shredding services free of charge (up to 25 file boxes per vehicle, 12”x17”x9”) and all shredded materials will be professionally recycled by trained, licensed and bonded document destruction specialists.

When they are destroyed, they’ll be recycled into new paper products which will reduce the need for landfill space and new lumber.

With new technologies arriving on the scene every day, thousands of computers, copiers, fax machines, TVs and other electronics become “obsolete E-waste” every year.

Most electronics contain a variety of materials that can be recovered and re-used as well as certain materials that are hazardous and unacceptable for standard municipal trash disposal. But, the City’s program will accept all E-waste and ensure proper recycling.
