A Santa Monica man was arrested on Monday, Sept. 24, at 3:26 p.m. at Christine Reed Park for swinging a chain with a padlock on the end at a man who was walking his dog.
Santa Monica Police Department officers went to the park at 1150 Lincoln Boulevard after they had heard about an alleged assault involving a deadly weapon.
Upon arrival the officers spoke with the victim who told them that he had been walking his dog in the park when a man had approached him and had started to whistle at his dog, followed up with attempts to pet the dog.
The victim had requested that this man refrain from such activity at which time the man had become angry.
This man then wrapped a chain around his fist and punched the victim in the chest with it. The victim then called 911 on his cellphone at which point the man began to swing the chain (which had a padlock on the end) towards the victim’s head.
The victim was able to avoid being hit be the chain.
The officers detained the suspect without incident and recovered the chain.
The suspect was positively identified and the officers arrested this Santa Monica resident, aged 33 years, and he was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, possession of an unlawful weapon, a probation violation and two outstanding warrants. His bail was set at $32,250.
