Santa Monica To Present ‘Obesity Epidemic’ Lecture Thursday Morning:

Santa Monica College presents “Weighing In: Obesity, Food Justice and the Limits of Capitalism,” a free lecture today, Nov. 1 that challenges widespread assumptions about the so-called “obesity epidemic” at 11:15 a.m.

It will be held in the Humanities & Social Science Lecture Hall 165 on the main SMC campus, 1900 Pico Blvd.

The annual Nick Gabaldón Day was held on Santa Monica’s Bay Street Beach at Tower 20 Saturday, with local environmental advocate Heal the Bay helping to celebrate Los Angeles’ diverse community of ocean lovers. A coalition of groups organized the day as a salute to Nick Gabaldón, a 1950s waterman of African American and Latino heritage, known as L.A.’s first surfer of color.
