Enjoy Saturday Afternoon With Author R.J. Palacio At Santa Monica Main Library:

Santa Monica Public Library wraps up its annual community reading program, Santa Monica READS, with an afternoon author talk with this year’s featured author, R.J. Palacio this Saturday, March 23 at 2 pm in the Lincoln Middle School Auditorium, 1501 California Avenue.

A special staged reading of scenes from Palacio’s novel “Wonder” will precede the author’s presentation.

For the last several weeks, adult and younger readers have been reading and discussing “Wonder,” the story of August (Auggie) Pullman, 10-year-old boy with a congenital facial deformity and his journey toward fitting in with other kids his own age.

Readers have praised the book for the discussions it has provoked between neighbors and friends, parents and kids, teachers and students, as well as its hopeful message of treating others with kindness and compassion.

Join library staff for this special series-capping event with R.J. Palacio, who is thrilled to come to Santa Monica to meet those who’ve been reading “Wonder.” A book sale and signing will follow her author talk.

As a lead-in to Palacio’s presentation, the library has also scheduled a staged reading of selected scenes from “Wonder,” adapted for the stage and directed by Edward Edwards.

The reading will be special for many, as the lead role of Auggie will be performed by Peter Dankelson, a vibrant and charming young man with a craniofacial condition similar to the one experienced by character in the book.

This event is free and open to all ages.

No reservations are necessary and seating is first come, first served.

The Lincoln Middle School Auditorium is wheelchair accessible.
