Santa Monica Schools Log Car-Free Miles:

The City of Santa Monica has announced the March Car Free Contest results.

Four Santa Monica schools participated in this friendly competition geared to making walking and biking to school a habit: John Adams Middle School, Lincoln Middle School, Will Rogers Elementary School and Roosevelt Elementary School.

For the month of March, the most “Car-Free” miles were earned by John Adams Middle School students who logged 352 total car-free miles.

Roosevelt Elementary School student recorded the second highest total miles with 267, with one second grade student walking an impressive 32 miles.

One first grade student at Will Roger Elementary bicycled a total of 19 miles – the longest biking distance of any student among all of the participating schools.

At Lincoln Middle School, one 8th grade class was recognized for having the highest level of participation.

Students tracked trips made to school without using an automobile, and these “Car-free” miles counted towards monthly incentives.

“The goal of this contest is to create a fun environment that encourages families to incorporate bicycling and walking into their daily transportation choice,” said David Martin, Director of Santa Monica’s Planning and Community Development Department.

The schools will continue to log their “Car-Free” trips in April and strive to log enough miles to reach San Francisco.

More winners will be announced during May’s Bike It Walk It events, to be held the week of May 6-10 at all Santa Monica-Malibu Unified schools.
