While boys basketball is getting underway, hoopsters on the girls side have already been doing their thing on the hardwood. The St. Monica girls basketball team is not same squad is was a year ago when it boasted CIF Division 4A Player of the Year Briana Harris.
Harris, the Camino Real League MVP, took her school-record 1,424 points with her to the next phase in her life. The loss of that kind of point production has already been felt by the Mariners. After making it to the CIF championship game this past spring, St. Monica is off to a rough start to its season.
The Mariners are sitting with a 1-3 record, the team’s latest defeat to Animo South Los Angeles. Animo defeated the Mariners 52-48. Getting points may be a problem for the Mariners this season. In their three defeats this season, the Mariners have been held below 50 points.
In the three losses, St. Monica has surrendered 50 or more points, dropping contests to Eagle Rock (51-46), Animo South Los Angeles (52-48) and to Walnut (51-39). Coincidently, the Mariners’ only win of the season thus far was a 57-28 victory over Rowland.
The Mariners will be participating in the South East Winter Classic before hosting Crossroads in the St. Monica Winter Classic next week.
