It was a good week for the St. Monica boys’ basketball team. The Mariners went 2-0 in games against St. Paul and Bosco tech to up open up Camino Real League play. Behind a huge scoring performance by Dennis Ashley, St. Monica easily defeated Bosco Tech with a 64-44 win.
Ashley turned in his dominant performance by connecting on six 3-point shots during the game.
The Mariners outscored the Tigers 26-18 in the first half to take an eight-point lead into intermission. The third quarter was all St. Monica as the Mariners scored 19 points in the third quarter while limiting the Tigers to just 11 points.
Even though he had an off game scoring wide, Spencer Gorman still came up big on the boards, grabbing 10 rebounds. Center Xiang Yu Meng contributed seven points and seven rebounds. The Mariners kept that momentum going against St. Paul, handing the Swordsmen a 67-30 defeat on last Friday.
St. Monica jumped all over St. Paul in the first quarter, blanking the Swordsmen while putting up 14 points in the period. St. Paul regrouped in the second quarter, scoring 18 points to make it a game. But the Mariners used a 24-4 scoring blitz in the third period to put away the game.
Kavin Dotson led the way for the St. Monica, scoring 21 points and grabbing six rebounds. Spencer Gorman added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Mariners.
