The regular season for high school basketball ends next week. The Santa Monica boys’ basketball team more than likely will be playing beyond that. Samohi is currently tied with Beverly Hills for first place in the Ocean League after whipping Hawthorne and Inglewood within days of each other last week.
The Vikings have won three straight Ocean League games after those two wins. What does that all means? It means that with a several games left before league play ends on Feb. 12.
Samohi, with remaining games against Beverly Hills, Morningside and Hawthorne to close the season, would help itself for postseason play by winning a couple more Ocean League games. The Vikings are in for a tough climb, but with Jonah Mathews and Travis Fujita stepping up their play, Samohi can make a good run.
With the cupboard laid nearly bare from the departure of most players that played on last year’s CIF-winning team it’s been an inconsistent season for coach James Hecht’s team, which has posted a 13-9 overall mark before it went into its Ocean League matchup against Culver City on Wednesday.
The good news is that Samohi has only suffered just one defeat in league play. The Vikings’ only loss was at the hands of Beverly Hills, a team it plays Friday night. The Vikings posted a 61-45 win against Hawthorne before going out to defeat Inglewood 58-48.
