Santa Monica resident Sarah Kovacs will join 75 other athletes and coaches from Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) in New Jersey to compete in the 2014 USA Games being held on June 14-21, 2014.
Team SOSC will join 3,500 athletes from around the country to compete in 14 sports.
Kovacs, 20, will compete in track and field.
“Competing in sports gives me the opportunity to be part of a team, gain lifelong friends, and cheer on other athletes,” Kovacs said.
In addition to competitions, one of Kovacs’ favorite events at Special Olympics Summer Games is the athlete dance where she is able to relax and enjoy time with her friends.
A training camp will be held March 7-9 at California State University Long Beach for athletes representing Southern California. The camp will include team building activities, sports training, and trip logistics.
The 2014 USA Games will kick off with a sendoff pep rally for Team SOSC on June 13, the night before they leave for New Jersey.
The USA Games Opening Ceremonies will include a parade of athletes, lighting of the torch, and entertainment.
