A pair of new movies enjoyed a robust premiere weekend at the continent’s box offices, and opened neck and neck.
“Gone Girl” was on track to sell $38 million in tickets, and “Annabelle” was right behind at $37.2 million, according to studio estimates gathered by Rentrak.
“The Equalizer” was third with $19 million in sales, and “The Boxtrolls” was fourth at $12.4 million. They both are in their second week of exhibition.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies in the U.S. and Canada this weekend, as estimated by the distributors and collected by Rentrak, were “The Maze Runner” ($12 million), “Left Behind” (premiering at $6.9 million), “This Is Where I Leave You” ($4 million), “Dolphin Tale 2” ($3.5 million), “Guardians Of The Galaxy” ($3 million), and “No Good Deed” ($2.5 million).
