50 Laptops Stolen From UCLA Equipment Loan Room Over The Weekend:

More than 50 laptop computers worth more than $30,000 were stolen from an equipment loan room in the Charles E. Young Research Library over the weekend, authorities said today.

The computers were taken early Saturday morning by a suspect wearing UCLA sweatpants and blue running shoes, according to campus police, UCLA Director of Media Relations Phil Hampton said.

The suspect, who is thought to be the same person responsible for the burglary of laptops from Ackerman Union on Sept. 28, was videotaped, Hampton said.

The suspect smashed an east-facing ground level window to gain access, then smashed the window on a door to the room where laptops are loaned to library patrons.

Campus police are hoping the video footage will allow them to identify the suspect, who is described as a white man, 5 feet 10 inches tall. Some of the video shows a suspect rolling a suitcase.

The suspect entered the library at 2:26 a.m. He then left the room with three roller suitcases and a shoulder bag at 2:41 a.m. The crime was reported to police at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The equipment loan room has been temporarily closed and patrons are being referred to other library facilities on campus.
