Santa Monica High School Track Team sent some of its talented runners over the weekend of Feb. 15/16 to participate in the prestigious California State High School Invitational Indoor Championships held at the Save Mart Center in Fresno.
The state meet took place over two days to showcase some of California’s best athletes.
Samohi had their own group of special athletes that qualified for the much coveted event. Amongst those athletes was the super talented Marcel Espinoza who has continued to break sprint records effortlessly over the past few years under the supervision of Samohi’s talented coaches.
Espinoza smashed the 300 meter record in 36.29 seconds to take the title as state champion.
Head coach Tania Fischer beamed with pride as she said, “I am proud of the Samo athletes who participated in the event and I am extremely grateful to my team of dedicated coaches for all their continued hard work. We naturally are very proud indeed of Marcel Espinoza who broke the school and event record in great form.”
Other team members broke Samohi indoor records with the following times:
Girls 300m – Halimat Adeyemi 45.23
Boys 600y – Oliver Peake 1:19.29
Girls 600y – Ariel Silverman 1:30.97 (9th)
