The public is invited to explore the more than 60 artist studios and multiple creative venues that occupy the airport’s converted airplane hangars during the 9th Annual Santa Monica Airport ArtWalk this Saturday, March 14.
Featuring open studios, art and ceramic demonstrations, theater and art workshops, live music and food trucks, the ArtWalk offers a fun-filled day of artistic exploration from noon to 5 pm.
The studios boast a variety of mediums and styles including painting, sculpture, ceramics, and mixed media.
ARENA 1 Gallery presents the exhibit ges•ture, featuring artists who use movement and explore gesture in their artwork. Santa Monica College Ceramic Arts demonstrates wheel throwing and Raku firing throughout the day and hosts a sale of student work.
At The Museum of Flying, Aviation artist Mike Machat talks about the Museum’s new mural in progress and gives visitors the opportunity to play Stump the Artist – name any type of plane and Mike will draw it from memory creating a one-of-a-kind art piece.
Hands-on and interactive activities for all ages include: highlights of The Ruskin Group Theatre’s popular monthly offering L.A. Café Plays; a participatory chalk mural led by Airport artist Laraine Mestman; a monotype workshop with Airport artist Jackie Nach; a communal art piece made of recycled bottle caps with the City’s Resource, Recovery & Recycling Division; the popular ArtWalk Stamp Hunt, a self-guided exploration of the ArtWalk and airport with a prize for those who complete it, and tours of the three sustainable designs of The Airport’s Demonstration Gardens.
The five-piece band, Brasilidade, bring the warmth and energy of Brazil playing their samba and pagode rhythms throughout the airport.
There are also special activities for children including a communal ceramic art piece with Santa Monica College Ceramic Arts, a jewelry making workshop with Airport artist Paula Rosen and theater improvisation workshops in the Ruskin Group Theatre.
Local restaurant Spitfire Grill, filled with WWII military and Douglas Aircraft photography, serves traditional American food. Three different food trucks serve a variety of savory and sweet including: Border Grill Truck with gourmet tacos, quesadillas, ceviche and more; Son-of-a-Bun with burgers, hot dogs and chicken sandwiches, and the Pudding Truck dishing out decadent old-school- stove-top pudding and handmade toppings along with coffee.
The event will take place at Santa Monica Airport, along Airport Avenue between Bundy Drive and 23rd Street, Santa Monica.
The Airport ArtWalk is free of charge, and open to all. Parking and bike valet are also free.
