Latest police, crime and courts news.

A Culver City man was killed this morning in a fiery multiple vehicle crash that closed the eastbound Santa Monica (10) Freeway for several hours in the Mid-City area, authorities said.

The collision was reported at 3:44 a.m. on the eastbound 10 at La Brea Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Monica Posada, who said one vehicle caught fire.

Assistant Coroner Chief Ed Winter said Gregory Powell Huie, 64, died at the scene.  Another motorist, a 60-year-old man whose name was withheld, was hospitalized.

A SigAlert was issued by the CHP, which diverted eastbound freeway traffic onto a connector road, Posada said.

One eastbound lane was reopened about 6 a.m., and the remaining lanes were reopened about 7:35 a.m., the CHP reported.
