Man Killed After Driving His Pickup Truck Off 605 Freeway In Long Beach:

A 38-year-old man driving a pickup truck was killed when he allowed the vehicle to go down an embankment on the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway in Long Beach and overturn, the California Highway Patrol said today.

The crash was reported about 7:10 p.m. Saturday on the southbound side of the freeway south of Carson Street, according to a news statement from the CHP.

The vehicle, a 2003 Ford Ranger, came to rest upside down in a concrete drainage ditch, according to the news statement.

The motorist, a resident of Santa Ana, was pronounced dead at the scene.

In their news statement, the CHP released the name of the motorist as Abelardo Lopez Cruz, adding that his next of kin has been notified of his death.

A lieutenant at the coroner’s office said they had yet to notify Cruz’s next of kin.
