Letter to the Editor: A Wild Coyote Appears!

Dear Editor,

I live on 10th Street between Broadway and Santa Monica.  Apparently there is a (?) coyote prowling our block/alley looking for easy pickings.  Last Friday morning, the head of a neighbor’s cat was found on the walkway in between buildings at 1428 11th Street.  Another neighbor’s cat has been missing for 2 weeks almost certain to have met the same fate.

I know it is not unusual to for coyotes to roam some SM neighborhoods (nearer to canyons, parks with heavy vegetation).  But to have them roam the business area flats is not something I have seen or heard of in my 22 years of living on 10th St.

SM Animal Control shrugged off a neighbor’s concern when contacted yesterday.  Several of us wondered if perhaps our SM local news outlets would help to alert residents to the presence of the predatory animal in the SM flats since the City is not.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

S. St. Lawrence

The Santa Monica Police Department has released a bulletin regarding preventative measures for coyote sightings.
