Warring apes battled past a web-slinging superhero to claim to the top spot at the North American box office, as “War for the Planet of the Apes” debuted in first place at theaters, according to final figures released Monday.
The latest installment of the “Apes” film series earned $56.3 million to lead the way at the box office, with “Spider-Man: Homecoming” slipping to second place with $44.2 million, according to comScore. “Spider-Man” has earned nearly $207.3 million in just two weeks of release.
The animated sequel “Despicable Me 3” collected $19.3 million between Friday and Sunday to place third, giving it a three-week haul of $188.4 million. The action-thriller “Baby Driver” earned $8.7 million, followed by the romantic comedy “The Big Sick” with $7.5 million.
Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were “Wonder Woman” ($6.8 million); “Wish Upon” (debuting with $5.5 million); “Cars 3” ($3.1 million); “Transformers: The Last Knight” ($2.8 million); and “The House” ($1.7 million).
