Palisades Park Getting Fenced Off

After weekend of crowds Santa Monica to put up fence along popular destination

By Sam Catanzaro

Santa Monica officials have fenced off Palisades Park as crowds remain at the popular destination that was shut down last week to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19)

“Since closing Palisades Park last week along with [LA County’s] beach closure, we’ve continued to see crowding in the park making adequate physical distancing impossible. Diverting police officers to patrol the 26.4-acre park for the duration of this emergency is not realistic. We need every officer to be focused and available to respond to public safety. It also weighs heavy on us to cite individuals because we know many people are unemployed or furloughed,” the City of Santa Monica said in a statement.

According to the City, the installation of fencing will begin today and is expected to be complete early this week. Parking on the west side of the street will be closed to the public.
