By Sam Catanzaro

A man faces three counts of burglary after getting caught breaking into a Promenade restaurant, arrested, released from custody and then breaking into the same eatery days later.

According to the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD), on August 26 around 3:28 a.m., officers were dispatched to an in-progress burglary at CULT Restaurant, 1460 3rd Street Promenade.

“The reporting party was able to see a male inside the establishment, through a live security surveillance feed, and recognized him as the same subject from a prior burglary,” the SMPD said in a press release.

When officers arrived on the scene, they contacted the suspect, 42-year-old Jason Tyrone Strickland, inside the restaurant and took him into custody. SMPD officers located a metal bar used to pry open a window and security surveillance footage showed Strickland attempting to access the cash register and safe, police say.

According to the SMPD, detectives were able to connect Strickland to two other recent incidents.

On August 20, 2021 security surveillance footage shows Strickland breaking into the restaurant and stealing cash and two bottles of wine. In addition, On August 22 SMPD officers were dispatched to CULT restaurant to investigate a burglary alarm. Inside they located Strickland and arrested him.

“He was subsequently issued a citation due to California’s emergency zero bail order,” the SMPD said.

On August 30 the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office filed three counts of burglary against Strickland for his involvement in these incidents.

Strickland remains in custody pending a $21,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on September 22.
