Venice Community Housing Corporation (VCHC) has plans for a new affordable housing complex that would be located between two Metro stations in Santa Monica, Bergamot and 17th Street/SMC.

The non-profit developer has branched out into neighboring city Santa Monica with this plan that will go before The Santa Monica Architectural Review Board next week for consideration for the first time. VCHC’s plans are to demolish the industrial buildings located at 1624 20th Street and then use the site to construct a seven story affordable housing complex. This complex would have 78 units and an underground parking structure with 26 spaces for vehicles. The units would be a mix of one, two and three bedroom apartments that would range between 450 to 900 square feet each.

The designers of record for this project are Atelier Cory Henry and KFA Architecture and is, according to Urbanize Los Angeles, designed in the “contemporary style, and would have an exterior of aluminum, stucco, and concrete.” and the complex’s plans call for an O shaped footprint. The complex would have amenities for the residents like a community room and courtyard on the ground floor and landscaping areas on the third floor and on the roof.

The VCHC’s presentation to the Santa Monica Architectural Review Board is a precursory review for the board and there is no plan for the Board to vote on the project for now. According to the designer Henry, the plans that will be presented represent an early stage of the development’s overall plans and even now, changes in the layout of the building’s windows and color palette are in the works.
