Members of The Smmusd Board Of Education Are In The Final Stages Of Searching For a Superintendent, With a Selection Anticipated in Early June.
This week, members of the SMMUSD Board of Education conducted interviews with candidates for the district’s superintendent position.
This marks one of the final stages in the search process for a new superintendent. The announcement of who will be selected for the position is anticipated in early June, roughly six months following the departure of former SMMUSD superintendent Ben Drati, who announced his resignation in November 2022.
Mark Kelly was appointed as interim superintendent on December 15, effective from January 2023, and the executive search firm Leadership Associates was hired in February to lead the search process.
Following this week’s interviews, the next steps will include thorough background and reference checks of potential candidates. Over the past few months, Leadership Associates has gathered community input through an online survey and meetings with various stakeholder groups, posted an official position description outlining desired experience and qualities, and screened candidate applications before proceeding with an interview.
The new superintendent is expected to commence work at the start of July this year, prior to the 2023-2024 school year. Additional information on the next steps in the process will be provided later this week.
